LGBTQIA+ Awareness among Gen -Z
LGBTQIA+ Awareness among Gen –Z?
Pride month concluded recently, but there was little change seen in Indian society. And then I started to ask myself whether the people around me and especially my generation are as liberal as they seem to be, or am I just living in a bubble where I think they are. Then I realized so many instances where I have seen people around me being homophobic knowingly or unknowingly. I recall a game in our class where, when all students returned from an activity period, the person who had come 6 in was made fun of by being called different homophobic or transphobic names. Around me, there have been more incidents of people bullying or making fun of others with homophobic or transphobic words. In half of the cases, they do not even educate themselves about the possible effects of these words before using them. These kinds of incidents sadden me, making me wonder about what the future holds. Can we create a safe space with acceptance for everybody or are we just gonna keep doing the same thing?
My life is
filled with people who are very open and liberal. And then there are those
people in my life who think homophobia is cool, and they get pleasure from
doing things that hurt people on various platforms, such as social media and spreading stereotypes about them . Making
it clear to me that my generation has both kinds of people.
As a
generation, there are so many things we can do so that the future is better and
safer for all, but before doing that, let's examine some of the things that
affect our thinking into not being a liberal as people between children and
almost adults. From our upbringing to our group circles to the kind of
mentality we adopt, so many things affect us. A person whose family taught him
that being gay is wrong will think that way until he is taught otherwise by
others. So to deal with this, we must do a few things as individuals. Our first
step can be to make our friends around us aware of their errors. To educate
people, especially elders in our families, and to explain to them that these things
are not wrong, but just natural and that people like these also existed in all
our mythologies. In conclusion,
understanding the stereotypes faced by these people and fighting injustices done to them can help us work towards the
final goal of having them treated equally to other citizens of our country. It's
also important to mention that we have Millenials as supporters of our
generation as they also support many of the things that we support, so with
their help we can also make things better. Finally, I want to say that I don't
know how the real world works or what it's like to be part of a queer
community, but I have tried my best to understand them. And came to the
conclusion that It is possible to create
a safe, open space for everyone if we work together as a collective.
Feel free to
comment on anything else you recently witnessed or experienced , or an incident
that happened to in school that was very homophobic now that you've looked back
at it.
